Importance And Benefits of Virtual Classroom

Learning at home was done when a student called in sick or during vacations; there were four classroom walls for everything else. But that changed after the pandemic hit the globe, leaving businesses worldwide gasping for br

World Bank reports, “At the peak of school closures in April 2020, 94 per cent of students – or 1.6 billion children – were out of school worldwide, and, still, around 700 million students today are studying from home, in a context of huge uncertainty and with families and schools having to navigate across options of hybrid and remote learning, or no schooling at all.”

To quell the long-term impact of the crisis, a reliable model that goes beyond just ‘remote learning’ and renders quality at the same time was required. The concept of a Virtual classroom saved the sector from catastrophic effects. Usually, aspects related to technology, in this context, virtual classrooms, are considered a quintessential concept of Tier 1 cities. However, with rapid developments in the sector recently, quality education has been made available even to the country’s remote corners, making a virtual classroom no longer a ‘city’ concept.

Understanding the concept of virtual classroom

In a virtual classroom, teachers interact with students in real-time; students can ask questions and interact with peers and collaborate with them in a regular classroom, albeit over the internet. Advantages of a virtual classroom transcend brick and mortar setup where learning was confined within the walls, and there was no flexibility in terms of availability of the teachers or seeking help. Let’s look at some undeniable advantages of a virtual classroom:

  • Collaboration

In a traditional classroom setup, student collaboration doesn’t work as efficiently as it does via smartboards, chats, messages, video conferring, etc. In a virtual classroom, online discussions aren’t cut off when the bell rings.

  • Sharpened digital skills

As students carry on with their academic session without disruption, they also hone digital skills on online learning technology. Students become confident and productive with the help of interactive online tools such as online tests, drop boxes for homework, collaboration tools, e-mail communications etc.

  • Increased inclusivity

Students who are shy or have anxiety issues find virtual classrooms better to participate in. They do not have the pressure of raising hands in front of the whole classroom and can answer virtually without going through the anxiety of being watched over.

  • Easy accessibility

Among all the benefits, one of the most significant advantages of a virtual classroom is its accessibility. Students can submit assignments, listen to recorded live lectures at their convenience, and access the lessons from the comfort of their homes.

  • Enhanced learning

The visual experiences that virtual classroom learning offers amplify the learning experience for students. The use of audio-visuals, images, presentation, diagrams aids students to learn better, helping them have a good recall of the subject.

The advantages of a virtual classroom are enormous, but its effectiveness depends on how proactive teachers and parents are. Active parents and technologically sound teachers make for a perfect class resulting in excellent results for the children.

We are at a juncture where drastic changes are needed to save the sector from plummeting further.

World Economic Forum explains that schools often lack the resources to provide adequate instruction even before the coronavirus pandemic.

In one of its reports, WEF explains, “Historically, education has been the shortest bridge between the haves and the have-nots, bringing progress and prosperity for both individuals and countries, but the current education system is showing its age. Founded at a time when industries needed workers with a relatively fixed set of skills and knowledge, it is losing its relevance in an era of innovation, disruption and constant change, where adaptability and learning agility are most needed.”

Once the pandemic is over, the inclusion of technology within school premises must continue to stay relevant.
