Excellent teachers are the backbone of a great school. A school’s success or failure is largely determined by the teachers who can turn its vision into a reality. No student will succeed without the proper direction from excellent teachers. Most people who have achieved success in a variety of professions who were asked to choose one person who helped them along the way to achieve success would say their teacher played a major role. Most people will remember at least one teacher who encouraged them to believe in themselves and motivated them. But the question is what makes a teacher great? The answer can be: domain knowledge, cognitive intelligence, a spirit of adventure and bravery, communication skills, character and integrity, passion and humor, which make up the six key characteristics of a successful teacher. The most crucial characteristic of a successful teacher is, no doubt, their passion—a genuine, passionate, and profound excitement for their work. Passionate teachers find their work enjoyable. They genuinely care about each student and are interested in developing them.
As they rightly say “You cannot spark a fire in any other heart unless it is burning in your own”. Teachers who are truly passionate enjoy learning and growing and are enthusiastic about their students doing the same.

However these traits don’t exist on their own. Their strength depends on the following four pillars:

Planning

Long- and short-term strategies for meeting the specific requirements of each student, ensuring variation in the learning environment, and integrating lateral and vertical learning.

Assessment

Evaluations of the students’ academic and personal needs as well as their own self-evaluation, both subjectively and objectively.

Availability of the right environment

A setting that supports learning, the growth of character and personality, efficiency in the physical surroundings, and a social atmosphere that gives role models to learners. The environment has many different aspects, including the physical environment, the collegial environment, the pastoral environment, and the scholastic environment. To establish the ideal learning environment, all of these are required.

Teacher development

Constant learning and keeping up with the latest updates related to the subjects they are teaching, cognitive development , and technological upskilling.

Finding teachers with these traits is not easy for most schools. A lot of people also tend to avoid jobs with high levels of stress and low compensation with little possibilities for promotion. A vicious cycle is exacerbated by the low quality of teachers: as the profession’s negative image grows, there is less motivation to improve working conditions, which in turn promotes the low standard of instruction. Teaching is a very challenging profession, it is not for the feeble minded. The most difficult task that great schools must complete under these circumstances is to develop outstanding teachers. Though you might not always get the best teachers, you can train them to make them Super Teachers.
