In India, CBSE is a nationwide and widely accepted educational board. It plays a role in developing and managing the syllabus and curriculum for the schools to which it grants affiliation. The CBSE syllabus was created to provide the students with a balanced and comprehensive education while preparing them for future higher education and competitive exams.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) made certain revisions to its syllabus for the academic year 2022-23. These updates reflect a proactive response to the evolving needs of students and shifts in the educational domain. Emphasising an application-oriented approach, the revised CBSE syllabus aims to enhance the learning experience. Detailed guidelines have been issued to schools and educators to facilitate the seamless integration of the updated curriculum.

All of the top achievers I know are life-long learners. Looking for new skills, insights, and ideas. If they’re not learning, they’re not growing and not moving toward excellence.” – Denis Waitley.

What Does the 2022-23 Revised CBSE Syllabus Say?

The board has revised the CBSE syllabus for 2022-23. The need for revision of the syllabus was felt, keeping in mind the need for students to learn and develop the skills to succeed careerwise.

There are 4 major changes, including syllabus reduction, the introduction of new topics and concepts, change in assessment pattern, and change in the evaluation system.

Let us discuss all of these one by one.

  • Reduction in syllabus: There has been a significant reduction of 30% to 40%  in the syllabus for classes 9 to 12. According to the new CBSE curriculum, shortening the syllabus will help student focus on the critical and most important topics that will benefit their future. This has enabled students to understand the subject matter better.

  • Introduction to new concepts and topics: In English, the board has introduced additional grammar topics to enhance the writing and reading skills of the students. Mathematics now covers new topics such as probability, statistics, and data handling, so that students become aware of today’s data-driven world.
Furthermore, topics like artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and climate change have also been incorporated into the science curriculum.

  • Assessment Pattern Changed: The board has replaced the term-wise assessment for classes 10th and 12th with only one year-end examination.
Even in subjects that do not include practicals, internal assessments will be conducted, accounting for 20% of the final grade Consequently, they are to be evaluated by their parents, teachers, or peers according to the guidelines of  NEP 2020, with their marks adjusted accordingly.

  • Changes in the Evaluation System: The CBSE syllabus for 2022-23 suggests adopting a grading system instead of marks, emphasising continuous and comprehensive evaluation. This type of evaluation system will enable students to learn at their own pace as well as reduce stress and anxiety associated with the pursuit of higher grades.
In class 10th, there would now be 40 % competency-based questions while in class 12th, it will constitute 30%, including MCQs, case-based, source-based integrated questions, or others. The majority of these questions are descriptive, while others are objective.
