The NIPUN Bharat Mission, along with the new National Education Policy (NEP), is a step taken by the Government of India to enhance literacy and numeracy skills among school children. It was introduced to ensure that every child in the country could read and understand texts and perform basic mathematical operations at their grade level. The NIPUN Bharat Mission recognised the crucial role of foundational skills in reading and mathematics in moulding a student’s academic success and overall development.

The new guidelines released by NIPUN Bharat aim to improve the quality of education by equipping schools and teachers with support and resources, while incorporating the development of top-notch teaching materials, teacher training programmes and assessments to track progress and identify areas for improvement. Moreover, the NIPUN Bharat guidelines are a step towards obtaining the government’s vision of a literate and numerate India, where every student has access to quality education and is provided with the skills required to flourish in life.

“The role of technology in education is not just about using it to help students learn better. It’s about helping them learn to be better learners.” – Steve Denning.

What Are the Significant Features of the Nipun Bharat Mission?

The NIPUN Bharat guidelines aim at ensuring access to and retention of students in their foundational years of schooling, developing teacher capacity, creating high-quality, diversified student & teacher resources/learning materials, and tracking each student’s progress toward fulfilling the learning objectives. As a result, NIPUN Bharat guidelines emphasise on making the foundational level of learning holistic, inclusive, integrated, enjoyable, and engaging. Some of the key features of the NIPUN Bharat Mission are as follows:

  • The Mission aims to target Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN).
  • The Mission’s goal is to accomplish the needed learning objectives by the end of the third grade to increase awareness among the community, parents, volunteers, etc.
  • It ensures that children should be able to read an age-appropriate unknown text and clarity at a rate of 45 to 60 words per min by the end of Grade 2 and at least 60 words per min by the end of Grade 3 respectively.
  • The NIPUN Bharat Mission pays particular attention towards the development of teachers’ capacities because they will be the group that is most responsible for NIPUN Bharat’s success.
