As COVID cases recede in the country, schools in a few states have opened their doors. What seemed like a never-ending halt is coming to an end after more than a year. Online learning has been the education sector’s saviour and helped students learn during unprecedented times. As online learning was an abrupt shift and caused chaos in the sector, reopening schools will be equally chaotic. However, this handbook is here to help you and your students make a smooth transition. To avoid past mistakes, having a model that can help a school survive this shift and is resilient against future impediments is required.

Schools in the post-lockdown world. How will they look?

The COVID-19 induced pandemic has changed the education sector forever. Traditional schooling will not be sufficient, nor will it be adequate to deal with a crisis of such massive magnitude. So then, what is the right approach to new-age schooling? What is it that the owners can do to make their school model robust to withstand changes? Schooling in the post-pandemic world is undoubtedly going to be challenging. Below are some concerns:

  • Ensuring undisrupted learning for students at all times
  • Delivering high-quality and meaningful education even when schools are shut
  • Ensuring student and staff safety
  • Dealing with the increased cost

school reopening While schools have started opening, the third wave still lurks around the corner. A national daily quotes, “Based on different mathematical models, the current predictions by various Indian researchers and leading medical bodies indicate that a third wave can be expected to strike India in September-October 2021.”

Unfortunately, the ordeal is not yet over for Indian schools. Uncertainty now resides at the heart of the sector—meaning schools must adopt a model beyond the conventional framework to stay afloat. Traditional schools are not equipped to deal with the sudden challenges or shifts, nor do they help conduct daily administrative functions smoothly.

The use of technology in the sector has become irrefutably important, but its mere usage will not benefit the entire ecosystem. Choosing the right software, training teachers to stay relevant across in-class and online classes and giving ample resources to children to allow them to learn at their pace are sacrosanct. There has been a significant surge in the use of technology post-March 2020 in the education sector. However, an unplanned approach, poor training of teachers and traditional methodologies can have devastating repercussions on the next generation.

Every stakeholder has gone through a role alteration post lockdown and to switch to something one is not trained for is challenging, especially when they are unaided.

This handbook answers every question regarding school reopening. It also discusses the pertinent issues concerning everyone involved in the student journey— from which approach to follow to how to implement it the right way. The dilemma of switching between online and offline learning has also been addressed, including guiding the stakeholders to run a school smoothly while maintaining a healthy budget.
