What are the 4 types of classroom management styles?

What distinguishes an engaging classroom from one that fails to inspire students? The answer often lies in the types of classroom management styles adopted by teachers. A well-defined classroom management approach ensures effective teaching, improved student learning outcomes, and a positive learning environment. For schools, selecting the right classroom management style is key to driving excellence.

Classroom management styles define the level of control teachers have and the degree of student involvement. Broadly, there are four types of classroom management styles:

  • Authoritarian
  • Authoritative
  • Permissive
  • Indulgent

Each style has its pros and cons. While one may offer more structure, another may encourage freedom and creativity. Understanding the benefits and drawbacks of each classroom management style helps schools create an effective teaching environment that promotes both discipline and student engagement.

Types of Classroom Management Styles

Authoritarian Classroom Management Style

The authoritarian style is characterised by high teacher control and minimal student involvement. In this approach, the teacher enforces strict rules, expecting full compliance from students without much discussion or collaboration.

There is little opportunity for students to express their opinions or take part in shaping their learning experience. While this style may create a disciplined classroom, it often limits creativity and engagement, leading to less student enthusiasm.

It is observed however that the majority of students perform better if they collaborate with their peers and have some kind of classroom involvement. This makes students feel accepted, heard, cared for and promotes a feeling of safety inside the classroom. Furthermore, a positive relationship with their teacher encourages students to reach their full potential.

Over time, schools have found that while an authoritarian approach may maintain order, it can limit students’ ability to develop critical thinking and collaborative skills.

Authoritative Classroom Management Style

The authoritative classroom management style aims to strike a balance between teacher control and student involvement. Students are encouraged to participate in the class and collaborate with their peers, while all the time following set rules. Student inputs and feedback are valued by teachers and actively worked upon to make learning a better experience for students.

In general, student outcomes in an authoritative classroom management style are positive, and usually, students show growth in all areas.

Schools that adopt the authoritative classroom management style typically see higher student engagement and better learning outcomes. This is because students feel valued, safe, and motivated to participate actively in their education.

Permissive Classroom Management Style

In a permissive classroom, both teacher control and student involvement are minimal. Teachers who adopt this style often lack clear structure, leading to unproductive classroom environments. While students may have more freedom, they often struggle without sufficient guidance or boundaries, which can hinder academic progress.

For schools aiming to provide structured learning, a permissive management style can pose challenges. Without proper teacher involvement, students may not receive the support they need to succeed academically.

Indulgent Classroom Management Style

The indulgent style offers students significant freedom but lacks the structure necessary for consistent learning outcomes. Teachers in this style are highly involved with their students on a personal level but may fail to set firm boundaries. While students may feel comfortable expressing themselves, this style often results in a lack of discipline, making it difficult to maintain focus and complete the curriculum on time.

Although students enjoy the freedom to explore, schools adopting this style may face difficulties in ensuring curriculum completion and meeting educational standards.

Choosing the Right Classroom Management Style for Your School

Selecting the appropriate classroom management style is crucial for fostering a positive learning environment. While authoritarian and indulgent styles may have limited applications, the authoritative approach often proves to be the most effective in encouraging student engagement and achieving academic goals.
