When we hear the word classroom, our mind quickly imagines a set of benches aligned in rows and columns and a teacher explaining a difficult concept on board. But now, the scenario has changed. The evolution of software and technology has given rise to the virtual classroom globally. A classroom is redefined as the live room where the teacher-student interaction is established over the web.

The virtual classroom environment is an advanced technology solution for learners. Progressive schools adopt technology to keep pace with the current dynamic learning environment and changing global economy.

But how exactly does a virtual classroom work? It is an online system where the students log in from their laptops or other devices to access lectures, modules etc. Students and teachers can connect to the classroom, irrespective of their location.

Traditionally a school’s growth was restricted to its geographic area. But in the online classroom system, the case is different. Online classrooms reach the remotest areas to educate students. If we look at the global market, the use of artificial intelligence and the internet has led to the rise of online classrooms. Moreover, digital classrooms have been recognised as an effective means to engage students in difficult subjects and complex topics.

What does a virtual classroom offer?

As an extended arm of technology, the virtual classroom is a boon to students and teachers. Online collaboration, access to live classes, flexibility etc., are some pros of using virtual classrooms. It not only stimulates interaction between teacher and student but also increases the productivity of the students. If you remember, the main agenda behind the virtual classroom’s introduction was to keep education going during the pandemic; but now more and more schools are making this an innate element of their structure.

A shift to virtual classroom

Though online classrooms are not a new way of learning, the pandemic and lockdown have led to a shift of the education system to virtual mode at large. According to UNESCO numbers, the COVID-19 outbreak affected the study of 1.37 billion students. That is when the virtual classroom stepped in, but now this shift is considered the “new normal”.

Why sign up?

Schools are offering online classrooms to their students, and many have now become virtual schools. Virtual classrooms for a very long time were considered inferior to regular classes. But advancements in online educational software has made it possible for virtual schools to give quality education without any disadvantages.

Some other prime benefits of a virtual classroom are:

  • Flexibility

You can schedule virtual classes anytime, depending on your time-table. Unlike traditional schools, you don’t need to travel to a particular location as classes can be accessed anywhere. Once you log in to the student portal online, you are at school. Students can access assignments, watch faculty presentations, join student discussions, conduct research, get assistance from student support services and receive feedback.

  • Interaction

Online classrooms involve group study and discussion that are great to prepare for upcoming tests. Teachers can connect with students and provide them with feedback about their exams or assessments. Online classes are indeed much more interactive than regular ones.

  • Excellent Learning

The virtual classroom has come out as an effective way of learning. The inclusion of fun and exciting modules that can be recorded and played as required has proved to be efficient.

  • Lower Cost

Online classrooms cut down the travel expense and are far less costly than regular schools. You don’t need to plan out schedules or arrange physical facilities for digital classrooms.

Anticipated Growth

Presently, virtual classrooms are turning out to be a successful way of providing education. KPMG and Google report that the ed-tech market is expected to cater to 9.6 million users in the coming years. The education system is no longer identical to the usual classroom set-up, and students are now leveraging ed-tech platforms and tools to learn at the desired place.
