Why do Indian schools need LEAD’s Sampoorna Hindi Program?

Give Your School The Lead Advantage

Hindi has been taught as an exam-focused subject for many years now across Indian schools. Students in English mediums schools do not perform as well in this subject as they do in the others, primarily because of three major reasons:

Pronunciation: They are unable to differentiate between short and long alphabet sounds and end up using them interchangeably, which changes the overall meaning of the sentence and leads to errors
Comprehension and Expression: Due to a poor understanding and foundation, students are unable to convey their thoughts in Hindi. They end up translating from their mother tongue or English and this leads to grave errors while reading, writing, and speaking Hindi.
Geographical Challenges: Hindi is spoken differently in various parts of the country. The colloquial use of the language is very different from what is taught in the classrooms and this gap has often left students confused. In Non-Hindi-speaking states, students face another conundrum as they lack incidental learning and hence are unable to learn the language and strengthen their foundational skills.

We discussed these reasons in detail in the first part of this series.

So what is the right solution to these problems?

LEAD’s flagship program ELGA i.e. English Language and General Awareness was launched with the intent to make English language learning more enjoyable and interactive for school students. The curriculum was designed in a level-based manner and focused on teaching English as a skill rather than a mere subject.

ELGA’s proof of success pushed us to reimagine the way Hindi was taught in all our classrooms.

  • Why can’t Hindi be taught as a skill too?
  • Why should it be only exam-focused?
  • Why can’t we make it more interactive and application-based?

We realised that there was no reason holding us back. LEAD launched the Sampoorna Hindi Program in 2020 to revolutionise the way Hindi language learning and teaching took place in all LEAD powered schools.

What makes LEAD’s Sampoorna Hindi Program unique?

After months of research, LEAD’s curriculum team has designed the Sampoorna Hindi Program based on these four major factors:

  1. Component-Based approach
  2. Integrated program
  3. Holistic Development
  4. Unique 5C framework

The objective of this program is to enhance the Hindi teaching-learning process in Indian schools, make the language application-based and improve the overall grades scored by the students in tests and exams.

Component-Based Approach (CBA)
To make Hindi language learning easy and effective, in the Component-Based Approach, language skills are distributed among different components, namely:

  • Letter/ word pronunciation
  • Whole word
  • Listening and reading comprehension
  • Grammar
  • Speaking and writing expression

The CBA approach is followed in a streamlined method where a student is taught in a scaffolded manner. The teacher first focuses on letters and words. Based on careful listening, students slowly understand the pronunciation of different alphabets and words. This comprehension pushes them to start reading and apply grammatical structures as well.

When the four above stages are successfully implemented, speaking and writing join the scheme to make the language learning process effective and complete.

Integrated Program
As part of the Sampoorna Hindi Program, LEAD has ensured that language skills are augmented with general awareness and values.

This goes beyond academics to develop a students’ social and relationship skills. Every lesson is carefully planned in such a way that students can learn the language via stories, poems, and activities that are based on real-life situations and things happening around them. This makes learning more relevant and easy to remember for all types of learners.

Holistic Development
The Sampoorna Hindi curriculum is based on LEAD’s value mantra of – Learn, Think, Do, Be. This mantra teaches students to Learn Well, Think Deep, Do Good and Be Leaders.

With every lesson, assignment and activity, this mantra has also been carefully incorporated into the curriculum so that students clearly understand why they are learning, what they are learning.

They learn to apply each lesson in the real world. By applying the good aspects of each lesson, they turn into well-balanced individuals with a strong character and set of values. By teaching and learning in such a holistic way, students get onto the path of becoming good citizens and future leaders.

Unique 5C framework
Unlike regular subjects, a language-based subject’s curriculum has to be designed very differently. The Sampoorna Hindi Program’s Curriculum is designed based on a unique 5C framework:

  1. Connection to life
  2. Connection to prior learning
  3. Catering to different learners
  4. Concentric learning
  5. Contextualisation of learning

This framework has ensured that the Program is easy to implement and visible results in learning can be seen in a very short period. Teachers too do not have to modify their teaching style and can easily incorporate this curriculum into their daily lives.
