Teacher training in India. Tracking the evolution

The coronavirus outbreak in 2020 brought schooling into our homes. Parents are now a lot more aware of what goes into teaching and how their children respond to what they are taught.

School closure across the globe has been challenging for teachers who had to overnight switch from blackboard to online platforms.

The hour’s need says that teachers need hands-on training on various available tools and know-how to deliver lessons efficiently.

online teaching and traditional classes: the key differences

Online teaching includes systematic ways of teaching. No matter how experienced or well versed the teachers are with technology, rapid software changes make it difficult for them to keep up with the developments. It is a must for the teachers to get along with technology and the pedagogical strategies for online teaching. Online teaching has become a crucial resource for teachers. To understand the functioning of these tools and to optimise their usage, teachers require proper training. To be a good teacher, it is essential to keep learning and acquiring skills to help them work on their approach and make the most online and in-class teaching.

A traditional classroom is where a teacher regulates the flow of learning. Students are given homework and exercises to keep up with the subject knowledge outside the school. The primary resource of the students in traditional classrooms is the teacher delivering them a standard curriculum face-to-face. At regular intervals, standardised tests are conducted to assess students’ progress. Under traditional classroom mode, the time, place, and learning pace remain constant.

Redefining the normal with teacher training in INDIA:

The year 2020 has changed the way how people looked at ‘normal’ in their lives. Social distancing and global lockdown have entirely changed the scenario for the education sector.

A few schools in India started training teachers to save the education sector from a sharp plunge where teachers are trained to conduct engaging lectures.

The teachers must be well-versed in the technology to efficiently juggle between the online classes, manage various subjects, and keep track of students’ performance.

UNICEF states that “Some teachers only share material to students without teaching it. Online testing is sometimes based on the principle of “work it out yourself”. Students are not acquiring real, long-lasting knowledge.”

Teachers are unprepared to deal with this newly arrived overhaul. To use online tools and platforms, teachers need proper training. Teacher training in India is gaining momentum in schools. Earlier, teachers had hands-on training in conducting a traditional class. With the new normal coming in, traditional aspects of education have come to a halt. Teacher training is more about helping kids cope with the stress caused by school closures, deploying effective ways to study, and handling remote classes.
