Ways to guide your child when they join an online classroom

Online classrooms have become an innate part of the Indian education system. While, the online transition initially was considered to be an interim relief, fortunately, or unfortunately, it is here to stay.

Schools now have to rise above the complexities of online learning and have to make their entire ecosystem conducive.

The burden of educating students has been more on the educators, however, to complete the school activities/assignments, parental guidance will be necessary. Parents can help their kids to navigate through their learning process effortlessly. Every kid is unique and it’s important to find out what works best for your child.

Let’s look at some effective ways that can be deployed at home to make the most of the online classroom:

  • Make space for learning

Since kids are used to learning in a certain atmosphere that is peaceful and inspiring, parents must also work towards making the home environment favourable to learning. Kids achieve their best work in a quiet, comfortable, and dedicated space that is strictly devoted to learning.

  • Maintain breaks

In the absence of a school camaraderie, it becomes necessary for parents to give ample time to kids to rejuvenate and relax. Kids will function their best if a routine is maintained preferably close to their ‘good old’ learning days. They might not get a ‘Games Period’ but parents can ensure they get a recess break or an hour to destress. Routines and schedules are extremely important for kids at schools and home alike.

  • Mix screen time with extracurricular activities

Since kids have been using a lot of ‘screen’ owing to online learning, they need to indulge in extracurricular activities too, away from screen time. To avoid any adverse effect on the minds of the young ones because of the constant use of monitors, parents can encourage their kids to read a book or take a break from technology.

The New York Times also suggests ways to devise effective ways to make learning at home, not just fun but effective. An article says, “Start by having a conversation with your child that’s less, “let’s find a way that I don’t have to nag you all day every day to do your work,” and more “let’s map out what successful learning will look like for you in this weird online world.”
